Title(s): Hikaru no Go
Creator: Takeshi Obata
Genres: Psychological, Tournament
Age Group: All Ages (Nothing objectionable)
Vintage: October 10, 2001
Status: Completed
Summary: Hikaru No Go is a coming of age story based on the manga of the same title which is in turn based on on the board game Go. The same basic storyline is followed by the manga and anime, with a few small changes between the versions. While exploring his grandfather's shed, Hikaru stumbles across a Go board haunted by the spirit of Fujiwara-no-Sai, a fictional Go player from the Heian era. Sai wishes to play Go again, having not been able to since the late Edo period, when his ghost appeared to Honinbō Shūsaku, an actual Go player of that period. Sai's greatest desire is to attain the Kami-no-Itte – "Divine Move", or the "Hand of God" – a perfect game. Because Hikaru is apparently the only person who can perceive him, Sai inhabits a part of Hikaru's mind as a separate personality, coexisting, although not always comfortably, with the child.

Even if you've never heard of 'Go' or you are not very interested in classic board games, this anime will keep you thirsty for more. The story and characters are amazing. At the end of each episode you will be wanting more and more till you finally watch it all and feel empty right after as if you've lost something precious. This is a must watch.

I found the plot and the animations very interesting and different since it's about go which I didn't really know about before I watched this. The storyline gets more and more interesting as Hikaru learns new things about go and gets better at it. I would have liked to watch more, after I finished watching the series I actually wanted to play go. There is also an OVA for Hikaru no go where Hikaru and his friends compete to get a chance to compete in the Hokuto Cup.

before this anime, i only came across "Go" when i watched chinese ancient dynasty drama where the game was played by the characters. this anime really expose me to the game of "Go", how it is play, the basic rule, etc. the plot is terrific, cast memorable, and the songs and music are great as well. i learnt that many japanese kids were inspired to learn "Go" after watching this anime, me included. i hope that my country would telecast this anime too.

lastly, sai...you are now one of my favourite anime characters. ^^

I just love the way it can make something turn from normal and not interesting into something amazing and addictive! I enjoyed Hikary no Go the first time I watched it a long time ago, but each time I get the feeling I need to watch it once more and never get tired of it! You really feel like you are evolving along Hikaru and it gets even more awesome when you realize after a few episodes that you can understand Go and you enjoy it as much as Hikaru does. It's an ordinary story, with extra-ordinary characters that make this anime an surprisingly (read more)

Though this anime may be fairly old, I still would recommend you to watch it. The whole series is around the old Japenese game played when emperors existed: Go.
Hikaru Shindou is possesed by this old Go obsessed ghost who was once a pro. He/ She (Dunno which) instructs Hikaru how and where to move the peices. As they play more and more, Hikaru became more and more interested. But sai feels that the time for him/her to stay is drawing to an end. How long can they stay on?
Hikaru no go is really worth watching and before you know it, you'll love (read more)

A really wonderfully classic anime that turns something young people wouldn't ordinarily be interested in into quite possibly their latest obsession. At first I thought it was going to be terrible, but Hikaru No Go really has a way of making Go seem like a fascinating and enjoyable game. This anime would be best suited to a teenage audience, or one enthused by Go. It's also pretty cute how Hikaru, the man character, almost always has something Go-related on the front of his t-shirts. I think a lot of people would be surprised by just how good this (read more)
