Summary: Sternbild City is home to people called "Next," who use their special abilities to protect the people as superheroes. These heroes solve cases and save lives so they can wear sponsor logos or acquire "hero points." Their activities are documented on the popular program "Hero TV," which picks the "King of Heroes" in a yearly ranking. The veteran hero Wild Tiger has always preferred to work alone, but now he's been assigned the rookie Barnaby Brooks Jr., who has a different perspective on being a superhero.

This is so disappointing. Episodes 1-12 were good for the random plot-less fun, the prickly (but surprisingly friendly) relationship between the two protagonists, and the amusing anecdotes and various plays on the mindless commercialization of modern-day society. Episode 13 was, for want of a better word...lame. An incredibly powerful villain was dealt with in such a brainless and simplistic fashion that I was quite shocked at the audacity of the show's creators. The only redeeming factor was that the two main characters finally managed to work together as a proper team for once (up to then, they were partners in name only).

Episode 14 confirmed my worst fears; "Tiger & Bunny" is well on the way to taking a downward spiral into the abyss; failing in terms of story, characters, humour...the works. Kotetsu - while never a very original design of protagonist - has now become the very embodiment of a typical "well-meaning idiot" type shounen hero...complete with a tsundere girlfriend, to boot. Barnaby, who I was very fond of due to his rather selfish nature and calm, collected behaviour, has been reduced to the part of obedient goody-two-shoes sidekick (woe betide those who thought they'd finally become good partners)!

Actually, this is starting look more like a romantic comedy than a superhero story...

The animation, despite rather conspicuous CG, is really not bad to look at. But from episode 12 onwards, most of the characters (with the exception of Kotetsu's love interest) are beginning to look very hastily-drawn. Another disappointment, since the people were quite good-looking in the first ten episodes.

If you're in the mood for some silly fun, watch episodes 1-13 and pretend the rest never happened.
