Summary: After his parents died, Shinpei Ajiro lived with the Kofune sisters, Mio and Ushio, but he has since moved to live on his own in Tokyo. But after Ushio drowns while trying to save the young Shiori Kobayakawa, he returns home to mourn her departure. However, bruises around Ushio's neck bring her cause of death into question.

Taking a step back, Shinpei becomes convinced there must be another explanation. Dangerous entities roam among the islanders, and a vision of deceased Ushio asks him to "save Mio" as her final request. He is certain that something is afoot—and Ushio's death is only a piece of the puzzle.

With the help of Mio and various others, Shinpei struggles to forge a future in which he, his friends, and family can stay alive. But the more he investigates, the more impossible such a future seems. This darkness infiltrates his home island. Just how much more suffering will he go through before finding the right path to save it all?

Even for snarky critics such as myself (just look at my other reviews), this anime shocked me. Summer Time Render is, although not completely flawless, outstandingly good. Looking for something to watch? Then give this a try. For shounen and shoujo anime lovers alike, this has it all, with incredible execution.

The main highlights are the attention and care to the writing and to the flow. For those that watched Baccano, you might notice similarities, except it's SO MUCH BETTER. Despite being good in many ways, Baccano is abysmal in key aspects: poor taste in parts of the writing and many other glaring issues (and much more boring), but since this is no Baccano review, I will just leave it at that. But basically, it is everything Baccano wanted to be, but miserably failed at. Summer Time Render actually does the approach justice (for the most part).

The beginning does show more Shounen Jump editor influences, though, which is both irritating and stupid, with usual fanservice garbage and such, but don't be misled by those into thinking this anime is no good. As far as anime and works of fiction in general go, this is REALLY good stuff. I say give it a try. You will probably like it.

Oh yeah, and the animation is top notch, even though anime has been getting lower and lower quality in 2021, 2022 and so on. There were I think only 2 scenes throughout the 25 episodes in which I noticed animation lip movement and voice acting were totally off and not-in-sync, but those aside, this is more beautiful and well done than anything of late. Great directing with the music and sound effects, as well. All-in-all, this is one of the greats.
