Six childhood friends grew apart in high school. One of them is Jintan, now a shut-in. He gets a request to fulfill a wish for Menma, the only one of their friends to have stayed the same over the years. In order to grant her wish, he will have to find and reunite their old friends.
This is the most recent anime I have started watching and yet I can quite assuredly say that it is already becoming one of my favourites. Five episodes in and I am already placing it near the top of my list. The emotional connection shared between the characters will most definitely affect you, and the fact that the cast are so relatable to just makes the anime even better. The storyline is simple but extremely effective; the character cast is small yet realistic and therefore easier to emphasize with; the entertainment - whilst not non-stop pulsating action - will draw you in and leave you feeling somewhat vulnerable. This is most definitely the most emotional anime, I, have personally ever watched and yet I don't hesitate at recommending it to anyone. There are comedic moments, slotted in perfectly alongside the amazingly brutal, yet refreshing 'tear-jerking' moments. I'm a teenage guy and yet I absolutely love this anime. I'd recommend to just about anyone looking for a decent anime, because it is just that. You should at least try the first episode, you won't regret it.
